The VATN (Vertically Aligned Twisted Nematic) LCD display is an excellent choice for your Industrial LCD displays. It is also one of the newer LCD technologies we offer at Focus LCD displays. We recommend the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) of industrial LCD displays take a serious look at the advantages of this type of display. Specifically, this new display technology has cutting-edge features, which are advantageous to the industrial display industry. The VATN display offers the brightness of an LED (light-emitting diode), a viewing angle that exceeds FSTN (Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic), and a life time that is 20x longer than EL (Electro Luminescent) or the blue color found in an OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode). That means that VATN technology has the best of the best from the LCD display industry!
VATN technology offers industrial LCD Displays a wider viewing angle
An LCD module operating in a rugged environment requires that the unit be more durable to extreme weather and that the display be readable at a wide viewing angle. Viewing angle is easy to understand when you know a few simple things. First, all LCD display technology is easy to read when you are looking directly at the display at eye level and you are not standing to the right or left of it. However, once you move the display above or below eye level or when you move to the left or right, then things change. The change in angle makes the display less clear and more difficult to read, and the more extreme the angle, the more difficult it is to read. Secondly, LCD viewing angles are always measured in degrees from the center. Consequently, if you are at eye level and you lower the display a few inches, you have increased the viewing angle, but you may have reduced the readability if you pass beyond the degree which that particular display can produce successfully. This can be demonstrated by the use of a digital wrist watch or even an older cell phone. Place the phone or watch right in front of your face and slowly lift it up well above your eyes keeping the screen at the same angle; as the angle increases the display will ‘fade’ and the information will become unreadable. Older display technology used on industrial LCD displays had a limit of 40 to 50 degrees above/below/left or right of the display. At this point the display was unreadable. VATN allows the user of the industrial LCD displays to read the display up to 70 degrees in any direction. This means less movement for the worker in the field to be within the viewing angle.
VATN displays remove hot and cold spots in industrial LCD Display applications
Industrial LCD displays of the past made use of negative mode LCD displays. Negative mode means that the letters or characters are light colored and the background is darker. The brightness of the display allowed the user to quickly read the LCD. This was true no matter if the factory environment was dark or in direct sunlight. The one main disadvantage to negative mode is that it has hot and cold spots. A hot spot is where the brightness of the backlight creates a stark pool of light. Conversely, the cold spot can make the display look dull and the letters difficult to read because they are in an area which is very dim within the display. Hot and cold spots are really obvious to notice in a display and often can make the display look cheap or of less quality, even though that isn’t generally the case at all.
VATN modules can be customized to meet the needs of the industrial LCD Display
VATN displays allow the industrial LCD industry to design the display around the customer’s design. The concept of customizing an LCD module to fit an industrial product is not new, but it has come a long way with the VATN display. Older display technologies used in industrial applications, such as TFT (Thin Film Transistor), OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode), and Plasma displays required a very high tooling cost and a high Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ). VATN technology allows the designer of the industrial LCD display to build the exact module for a much lower one-time tooling fee. Additionally, MOQ’s are now in the 1,000+ range. All of these advantages—the wider viewing angle, the lack of hot and cold spots, and its affordable customization—make the VATN the right choice for industrial LCD displays.
